Asiago, Italy, 1916. Stella is in love with Pietro, who is fighting on the front lines in the Great War. During a bombardment, the young man is wounded. Stella sees him die, but as his comrades carry him off, she realizes from a flicker of his body that perhaps there is still hope for him. A mysterious blond-haired woman catches his eye and changes his life forever, guiding him in search of his roots.
