This is good, basic Asatru. It should be in print again.

This book is an overview of the practices and beliefs of modern Asatru, as well as a summary of how beliefs were applied in ancient times. It discusses history, modern history, rituals, moral and community standards. This should grace the shelf of any Asatruar. It does contain some out of date information about the Ring of Troth, but that's not really a big deal. It also has a number of basic retuals which I have found to be a good basis as a guideline for writing your own rituals.

Norse Pagan Beliefs--- The Basics

The first half of this book gives the basics of modern Norse Pagan beliefs. Unfortunately the author does not provide notes stating where in the ancient sources (such as the Poetic and Prose Eddas, the Norse Pagan 'Bible') evidence for each of these beliefs can be found. Still, this is a good basic work, useful for both Norse Pagans and for students of comparative religion of any faith. It will NOT be particularly useful, however, to those people who call themselves 'Christians' but haven't yet got round to reading the words of Christ on 'love thy neighbour'. The second half of the book gives various religious ceremonies of the Norse Pagan religion. These are a good starting point--- but they are not engraved in stone, if one doesn't like them one needn't use them. May Freyja and Forseti bless those who read these words!

Excellent Book!

It is best that you ignore the biased remarks of the Xtian writer below. Edred did not write this book to please Christians, but to vindicate the beleifs of our ancestors. It is a very good book, and it teaches the hearty values of our ancestors as well as their most holy ancestral practices. As a member of the Rune Gild(in which Edreda is the leader of), I can point out that he is NOT a Satanist, the Xtian below is flat out lying to you. Edred is through and through a follower of Odinn, this I know personally. One interesting thing that I should point out is that Xianity is allways saying that Satan is the Prince of Lies....but the funny thing is that Xtians are willing to lie to convert people.....what does that make them? I should also point out that Xianity is NOT an improvement over anceint Germanic religion....pick up this book and see for yourself. Anceint Germanic religion was something that was practiced by people of all walks of life, nobles, judges, lawyers, warriors, farmers, trademan, ect. It is not a "violent warrior religion". If we were to use that logic, then how do you explain the U.S. Army? Most people that belong to the U.S. Army are Xtian...does that make Xianity a "warrior religion"? I should also point out that in the Old Testement of the Bible, Yahweh(the Judeo-Xtian God) lead the Jews into hundreds of wars...even committing genocide on whole races(read about Joshua being lead into Isreal and told to murder every animal, child, and person)! Hmmm, such a nice and loving god, eh? I'm not critisizing the Jews, they did what they had to do to survive as a people, just as the germanic heathens that went into battle did what they had to do to survive. This is simply a fact of life, and it is quite evident that Xianity has does nothing to rememedy that problem. From a Heathen perspective, these bad events that occur in life shouldn't be lamented, but simply overcome with a smile on ones face....joy and humor even in the face of terror. The way of the Heathen is a way of honor, courage, and a joy of life. I should also point out that the Xtian below is wrong when she said that Heathens did not make the sign of the hammer(which looks like an upside down T, not a cross...again another lie from a Xtian), they did this over their drinks and food to bless it with Thor's might and main. By the way, a good book to read with this would be True Hearth by James Chisolm. By the way, no "end" is coming(hahaha...whatever!)....ragnorok is simply a destruction phase before the cosmos is reborn anew...unlike Xianity which beleives that everything will be destroyed and all those whom followed the "true" god will go to heaven...while all the Heathens, Muslims, Jews, Hindues, and just about %99.999 of the population will burn in hell. The End.(sounds like a line of bs to me!).

Should come back into print; essential information

This book is must reading for anyone interested in Asatru. Although the writing style is difficult at times, Thorsson has a great summary of the aspects of the religion. Note that the address of the Ring of Troth is now out-of-date. Thorsson does blast Christianity and other "Middle Eastern" religions rather more than is necessary, but he does make a strong case that the Troth is the logical religion for Germanic-descended people, as it is based on what their ancestors worshipped. In Thorsson's view (and mine), religion is not "one-size-fits-all"--there is no universal religion. This is a good introduction to both the religion and the Ring of Troth as an organization.
