At school the author sang in Gilbert and Sullivan operas, most enjoyably as Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance". Later, as a student, she tried her hand at directing plays. Theatre has always been a keen interest so that, in retirement, play-writing and studying drama came to be as absorbing as short-story writing. Taking advantange of her membership of the Literary and Philosophical Independent Library in Newcastle she spent hours every week in a silent basement cubicle while characters talked and argued at will in her head.
