This second volume of A Book of Devotions provides a brief message for all of the Old Testament historical books from Joshua through Esther. It is the fruit of daily worship services at Exeter Presbyterian Church in Exeter, NH.The entire Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is the story of one people group out of all the thousands on the earth. The Old Testament prepares this one group, Israel-the Jews, for the coming of the Jewish Messiah. The New Testament records the conflict between Jew and Jew concerning the correct interpretation of the Old Testament.While the Bible is a Jewish story from beginning to end, it is of utmost importance to all the people groups of the earth. Through the Christ, salvation would come not only to Jews, but to all the Gentile nations who did not have the books of the Law. The promise that God gave to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in Genesis, would be important for the blessing of all the nations.In the historical books of the Old Testament we further refine our focus to one tribe within the chosen nation. Judah, and especially the line of King David, becomes our central concern. The kings of Judah would come from the family line of David. More importantly, the Seed of the woman who was destined to crush the head of the serpent would be both the Son of David and the Son of God.
