By Thomas Wentworth Higginson

Book Overview

A Book of American Explorers, written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson and originally published in 1877, is a collection of stories about the explorers who discovered and mapped the vast territories of North America. The book includes narratives about famous explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando de Soto, and Lewis and Clark, as well as lesser-known adventurers like Estevanico and Samuel de Champlain. The book is divided into two parts: the first part covers the early explorers who paved the way for European colonization, while the second part focuses on the explorers who ventured into the interior of the continent. Each chapter tells the story of a different explorer, describing their journey, their encounters with indigenous peoples, and their contributions to the exploration and settlement of North America. Throughout the book, Higginson emphasizes the bravery and determination of these explorers, as well as their impact on American history. He also highlights the hardships they faced, including disease, starvation, and conflict with native populations. A Book of American Explorers is a fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in the history of North America, and it provides a valuable insight into the early exploration and settlement of the continent. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
