In aiding the escapees, he meets Nat, an escaped slave from Alabama.. Discovered by slave catchers, Nat and Marcus escape to a Union Army camp in Mansfield, Ohio. From this camp they join the campaign with the 65th Ohio Volunteer Regiment, bringing Nat back to the farm in Alabama.
