By Arthur S. White

Book Overview

Arthur S. White's A Bibliography of Regimental Histories of the British Army remains the definitive reference work for anyone researching the history of the British Army and its individual units. Originally published in 1965 by the Society for Army Historical Research and the Army Museums Ogilby Trust, the bibliography provides a comprehensive guide to published histories of British Army units, battalions, regiments, and specialist corps. The original 1965 edition was compiled using records from the War Office Library and includes a foreword by Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer. It was subsequently reprinted in 1988 with the addition of an important National Army Museum supplement. making the work even more useful to modern researchers. One of the book's greatest strengths is the breadth of its coverage. It includes not only regular Army units but also auxiliary formations such as the Yeomanry, Militia, and Volunteers. It also identifies histories relating to individual battalions and specialist corps, allowing researchers to trace sources that might otherwise be difficult to locate. For military historians, genealogists, and anyone investigating the service history of a particular British Army unit, White's bibliography is an invaluable starting point. Rather than being a conventional narrative history, it functions as an essential research tool and index, pointing the reader towards the published sources needed for deeper investigation. Its enduring usefulness, together with the subsequent additions, makes it a key reference work for the study of British military history.
