Written in a concise fashion for undergraduates at the freshman/sophomore level, this beginner's guide to finite math covers all the fundamentals and has an applied orientation. Topics are presented sequentially: a brief review of sets and numbers is followed by an introduction to data sets, such as histograms, means and medians, and then an introduction to counting which goes to the binomial theorem. This provides the basis for elementary probability theory. Graph study is defined, with an emphasis on its use in modelling. Matrices and vectors are discussed, along with several elementary commercial applications. An introduction to linear programming is presented. Examples and illustrations are provided throughout. Each section contains two sets of problems, with around 10 problems in each set; solutions are given to only the first set. The prerequisite for most of the book is two years of high school algebra. The text is intended especially for business majors but can also be used to cover the mathematics requirement for a number of liberal arts majors as well.
