In mid-summer 1944, the Allied forces arrived in the capital. The Nazi yoke has been liberated and the occupiers have fled. There is jubilation, but the war is not over yet. It will take many more months before the world will lay down its arms and peace returns. Now, it is time to rebuild - bigger and even more beautiful. As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. Her house was a gathering place for friends and family and there were often people around the big table that was always the center of her apartment. It always smelled of good, strong coffee and the laughter was always loud. My grandmother, her sisters, her brother and her friends lived in Brussels with the Nazi occupation during WWII. They were always ready to share their stories and memories. They did not embellish their stories, and their mischievous minds always remembered the most crisp and funniest situations they encountered as well as the difficult ones. I loved listening to these old stories - and never minded hearing them over and again. I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
