Witches, Dragons and Chumley's-Oh My!

I've loved this book since I first read it 22 years ago. It's silly, romantic (in fairy-tale fashion), and utterly delightful! Poor Esmerelda is turned into a dragon by a wicked witch only to be hunted by Prince Andre who longs for adventure. This is complicated by the fact that Esmerelda falls in love with Andre at first sight. Also, from the fact that Andre's over-protective mother cries when he gets a hair-cut, you can imagine how she reacts to his dragon hunting. And his father the king is more interested in his knitting. His joined on his quest by his sister the Princess Felicia because she's bored by everything else and figures dragon hunting might be somewhat interesting, and an assistant baker. Add to this the Evil Villian who enjoys taste-testing the various poisons his subjects keep trying to kill him with; Chumley, an extremely strong and extremely stupid minion used by the villian to 'dispose' of troublemakers, the fact that any of the characters are apt to burst into song at a moment's notice and the page Francis (or is it Frances?) and you have a light-hearted romp of a novel. If you're looking for serious Tolkien-esque fantasy this is NOT the book you want. 'Baroque Fable' is charming, nonsensical fun.

EXELENT

I THINK THIS BOOK WAS COOL. I READ IT 15 TIMES AND THEN MY MOM READ IT. THIS BOOK IS FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE VAMPIRES AND LOVE. IF YOU LOVE THINGS THAT TELL OF OLD THIS THE BOOK FOR YOU.

A wonderfully humorous journey of fun with dragons.

A light hearted fantasy adventure, A Baroque Fable is a novel I would recommend to any lover of humorous fantasy, silly songs, bored royalty, fairy tales, love, maidens turned dragon, or crompets. It may not be a literary masterpiece to be studied by captive students for centuries to come, but it is a highly entertaining tale well worth the read
