Kyogoku rewrote the story as follows: a boy who heard rumors of Heitaro's house being haunted, too timid to dare visit Heitaro until the disturbance subsided. Through their conversation, the boy seems to experience thirty days of strange adventures alongside Heitaro, ultimately undergoing a change and gaining insight. Ishiguro vividly depicts Heitaro's thrilling thirty days with ink-wash painting techniques; the monsters she portrays possess a charming simplicity, creating a unique humor in contrast to Heitaro's complete indifference towards them.
