A Biography of Wen Weng/文翁传 [Chinese]

Wen Weng, a native of Shu County in Lujiang (present-day southwest of Lujiang in Anhui Province) during the Western Han Dynasty, served as the Governor of Shu Commandery under Emperor Jing. At that time, the Shu region was remote and underdeveloped, with education largely neglected. To address this, Wen Weng dispatched junior officials to the capital, Chang'an, where they studied under erudite scholars or specialized in legal statutes. Upon their return, these individuals were appointed to key positions. Furthermore, he established a public school in Chengdu, offering exemption from corv e labor to those who enrolled and appointing high-achieving graduates as local officials. Within a few years, the intellectual atmosphere in Shu was transformed, and its scholarly achievements came to rival those of the cultural heartlands of Qi and Lu. After his death in Shu, a memorial temple was built in his honor in Chengdu, later known as the ""Stone House of Wen Weng."" Biography of Wen Weng chronicles his life and pioneering contributions to governance and education, particularly his founding of the first state-run schools. Beginning with his family background and early life, the book focuses on his tenure as Governor of Shu Commandery toward the end of Emperor Jing's reign, detailing his administration marked by integrity, benevolent governance, and the promotion of education and talent. Special emphasis is placed on his establishment of public schools and his implementation of an inclusive education policy that admitted students regardless of social background. This work offers a vivid narrative illuminating a crucial chapter in ancient Chinese education and Wen Weng's transformative role within it.
