Journey to the West (Complete Edition) / Extracurricular Reading Series is an ancient Chinese romantic, chapter-based novel of gods and demons. Based on the historical event of "Tang Monk's quest for Buddhist scriptures" and shaped through the author's artistic refinement, it deeply portrays the social realities of the time. The novel mainly tells the story of the birth of the Monkey King (Sun Wukong) and his havoc in Heaven, after which he meets Tang Monk, Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Seng (Sandy). Together, they journey west to obtain the scriptures, subduing demons and monsters along the way, enduring the eighty-one tribulations, finally reaching the Western Paradise to meet the Tathāgata Buddha, where the five pilgrims attain enlightenment.
