9 Activities to Help Get Your School Year Started in the right Direction, provides teachers with a number of activities to help them navigate the beginning of the school year in a positive way. It also promotes the idea of each student being "a big fish in a small pond". It provides opportunities for the student to be better known by his or her classmates, and to be recognized in a positive light not for any particular academic achievement but just for who they are. Some of these activities are geared towards getting to know each student better, and what is special and unique about them. Identifying a student by their own special and unique characteristics can help to build a student's self esteem, and can go a long way in helping them to do better in school socially, and can also lead to more success academically as well. Other activities here emphasize communication between and among students in a variety of settings. Learning is aided by students verbalizing what they're learning, and I encourage my students to talk about what they are learning as much as possible. A number of these activities expand opportunities for students to do just that. A third goal here, related to the others, is to try to develop a sense of the classroom as community. The teacher can have a lot to do with the tone or mood of a class, and several of these activities will help you to work towards the goal of having a caring class community. The more positive interactions between and among students in a day the better the classroom environment will be, and the more easily repairable when problems arise. Along the same lines as this is, as teachers we all want our classrooms to run smoothly and be well organized. You'll find activities here that can help in this area, too. So I encourage you to look through these and see which might work for you, and try a few out to see if they are a fit for you. If you pick up one activity that helps your class get started in the right direction, then writing this book will have been worth it for me. Best of luck to you as you navigate the school year. Yours is a most important task and can provide a springboard for success in the lives of your student. No pressure though! Tell me about your experience through my email. Any feedback is appreciated. Also let me know if you have any questions about any of the activities in the book. I'd be happy to help. Ron Brazil rjbrazil.55@gmail.com
