Its full title is An Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms (or The Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms). The author is Luo Guanzhong, a novelist from the late Yuan to early Ming dynasties. It is the first full-length chapter-based historical novel in China. Centered on the depiction of warfare, it reflects the political and military struggles among the three political blocs of Wei, Shu, and Wu. The story is broadly divided into five major parts: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, The Rebellion of Dong Zhuo, The Contest for Power Among the Warlords, The Three Kingdoms in Confrontation, and The Unification of the Three Kingdoms under Jin. Against a vast historical backdrop, the novel presents a succession of sweeping, powerful, and dramatic battle scenes. It successfully portrays nearly five hundred characters, among which figures such as Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, Zhuge Liang, Zhou Yu, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei have become household names. The narrative does not adopt a partisan "us versus them" approach to the historical accounts of the various sides, and its influence on later generations has been profoundly far-reaching. In the early days of its founding in 1953, Writers Publishing House included the four great classical masterpieces-Dream of the Red Chamber, Outlaws of the Marsh, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Journey to the West-among its published titles. This edition was one of the earliest and most influential versions published since the founding of the People's Republic of China. For these four masterpieces, we selected editions that best represent the essence of each work: Dream of the Red Chamber (Cheng Yi edition), Outlaws of the Marsh (Rongyutang edition), Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Mao commentary edition), and Journey to the West (Shidetang edition).
