Buzz McGinnis, a retired widower, owns a classic 1960 DeSoto Fireflite automobile of which he is very proud. He wants to display it, on the Road. The 'Road' being US Highway 66, the iconic 'Route 66.' Buzz plans to drive the Road from his home in the Chicago suburbs to the West Coast. Solo. His nephew, Lon McGinnis, believes Buzz, at seventy-seven years of age, is not up to it, neither mentally nor physically. But Buzz possesses the resolve to make the trip and a mysterious guide book.
