This book is a tribute to the remarkable, intriguing, and impactful women who were born in or have lived, loved, created, and shaped the San Diego we know today. Since I moved from Barcelona, Spain, to San Diego in 2000, I have always been fascinated by the history of this town I now call home and the stories of the women who came before and made a lasting impact. The idea for this book came during a historic tour in La Jolla in the summer of 2024. I was with my Italian friend Sofia, enjoying a forced sabbatical after being laid off from our corporate tech jobs. Inspired by the tour, I decided to combine my love for history with my passion for illustration. I chose to write and illustrate this book by hand, aiming to connect my brain and heart in the process. In a world driven by artificial intelligence, I wanted to return to the simplicity and beauty of creating by hand. This book, celebrating the extraordinary women of San Diego-whether born here or having lived here and unique in their own way-honors their vibrant stories. Handwriting this book amidst the dominance of AI is a small act of rebellion, celebrating human creativity and emotional connection. The mini-biographies in this book do not follow a strict structure; they are brief glimpses, not complete portraits. I encourage you to explore further. I have endeavored to be as accurate as possible, with much of the information sourced online. These are, in a sense, fragmented memories. Through these drawings, I aim to bring the women from San Diego's past to life, encouraging us to recognize and remember how wonderful this town is-a place that has attracted diverse and remarkable people throughout the years.
