With the murder of a pivotal drug kingpin and the collapse of his two-year-long operation, undercover narcotics officer, Kurt Herrick, needs to get out of New York City before the Mafia and the NYPD come after him.
Sheriff Gabe Gavi, a close friend of Herrick's handler, offers the fugitive four days of asylum in the small town of Mill Willow in exchange for his help on a case.
Kaylan Wilkes was found dead of cyanide poisoning in a beachfront holiday cabin on the outskirts of town. With no trace of a container for the lethal substance, both Herrick and the sheriff don't share the town's willingness to conclude that the death was suicide.
With only four days of amnesty to find the killer, Herrick quickly discovers the young man's death involves the entire town of Mill Willow, all beginning with Kaylan's lucky number, 44.
