With 41 Hologrammata, artists Vadig de Croehling and Christian Zorka set out to explore the newly emerging forms of plane projection associated with popular technologies like Google Street View and Google Photo Spheres. Concerned less with the design and engineering of such applications per se, the artists instead aim to understand their many, often unsettling aesthetic and philosophical effects, whether on individual faculties of visual memory and perception, or on the broader production of visual space in today's post-historical, hyper-mediated social landscape. In this regard, 41 Hologrammata not only subjects such virtual cartographic systems to a first, succinct operation of d tournement, but also offers to the casual and skeptical viewer alike a tool for the critical engagement with today's ever-proliferating forms of augmented reality.
