The story follows Olivia Waters, a gifted high school senior who has devoted her life to excellence, only to discover she has terminal brain cancer. Olivia must now deal with living while dying, and come to terms with her eventual demise while still searching for a way to enjoy the time she still possesses. She is urged by her close friend to travel and enjoy life while she still can, and so with her parent's begrudging approval and her college funding, she leaves the country to travel the world. She learns not only about herself during these trips, but also about the world and truly living.
