300 Words: Through Our Eyes is the second published book from the eighth-grade creative writing classes of a Pennsylvania school. In 2015 the students collaborated on a novel, Qwerty . This year, they present a unique collection of individual stories. These entries-some less than a page in length-are based on real experiences, while others explore fantasy, sci-fi, and verse. The collective lesson is that these students are treated as real writers. The teachers confer with them to create a unique opportunity so professional editors are able to do the same. These pieces, written for an authentic, real-world audience and purpose, are not merely an assortment of classwork by teenagers. On the contrary, these words come directly from the hearts and minds of the pupils themselves, guided by a mentor. With depth and clarity of both thought and emotion, these middle school students offer the spirit of youth in a collection as exceptional and varied as the authors themselves. Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as Donald Graves, Donald Murray, and Lucy Calkins, this extraordinary anthology serves to encourage the growth and development of talented writers everywhere.
