Herodotus, the stranger in exile, tells the story of history. He wanders across the desert. Chance and destiny are his fellow travelers. They change places before his eyes, one becoming inseparable from the other. The events he describes involve both fact and fiction. Artaxerxes, the successor of king Xerxes, chooses a scribe in order to rewrite history. He aims to depict the Persians as the victors of the Persian wars in order to instill fear and stability in all the conquered cities of the Persian empire. The truth, however, becomes manifest in one form or another, and history and those who live it engage in a battle of truths and untruths.
