In 2914, humanity has advanced technologically and had begun to explore and colonize other planets. They had discovered an asteroid named Elysium, which had a unique crystal that enabled them to build structures defying gravity. They had also developed a chip system in place of money, to identify a person's worth. They had begun to develop telepathy as a skill and had used it to eradicate crime. The population of Earth had grown to the trillions, and voluntary euthanasia was encouraged, although life expectancy was 125. They had spiritual revelations that led to accepting the end of life as a new beginning. Human-like robots mingled with society and assisted in everyday living such as cooking, cleaning, caring, security. But during the research on Elysium, a devastating virus was uncovered that destroyed their civilization.
