In 2024 and 2025 Russia regained the initiative. It took Avdiivka, Vuhledar, Selydove and Kurakhove and ground its way toward Pokrovsk at enormous cost. Ukraine surprised the world by invading the Kursk region, then lost it again. Glide bombs, motorcycle assaults and infiltration by small groups replaced the armoured offensives of 2022. Behind the front, Russia turned its economy toward war, Ukraine struggled to find soldiers, the United States paused and bargained over aid, and Europe began to rearm.
