Sugar skulls originate from the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Mexican holiday celebrated on 1st & 2nd November when they are used to decorate gravestones. Traditionally, they were molded from sugar and given colorful decorations of icing, feathers, beads and foil. While the idea of skulls as decoration might seem gruesome, they're actually a positive symbol of death and have been embraced across the world as popular tattoo and t-shirt motifs.
