Following the death of Saul at the end of 1 Samuel, David begins to reign over Israel. At first, his reign is only over the tribe of Judah, but the nation eventually unites under David as he reigns from Jerusalem over the twelve tribes. David will be the king by whom all other kings of Israel will be compared. He was the ruler who would be a man after God's own heart. He would be the recipient of God's gracious covenant in which he was promised that he would not lack a descendent to sit upon the throne. But his reign would also be marked by his own sin and the horrific consequences of that sin. 2 Samuel is a wonderful account of the grace and faithfulness of God and the growing realization of the need for great David's greater Son to come into the world.
