2 Kings: Understanding God's Word One Book at a Time

By Ambrose Fletcher

What happens when kings fail, nations collapse, and the structures that once seemed secure are swept away?

Second Kings completes the solemn history of Israel and Judah's monarchy. Elijah's ministry comes to an end, Elisha continues the prophetic witness, royal houses rise and fall, and both kingdoms move steadily towards exile. Samaria falls to Assyria, Jerusalem is destroyed by Babylon, and the temple is burned.

Yet this is not merely a book of national decline. Second Kings reveals the certainty of God's Word, the seriousness of persistent rebellion, the limitations of human leadership, and the mercy of God towards the vulnerable, the suffering, and the outsider. Through widows, servants, prophets, kings, foreigners, and exiles, the Lord shows that He remains sovereign, faithful, holy, compassionate, and powerful to save.

This accessible guide will help readers understand: the historical setting and structure of 2 Kings;its principal people, places, events, and themes;difficult passages that often raise questions;what the book reveals about the character of God;how its failed kings, prophetic ministry, cleansing, judgement, and exile point forward to Jesus Christ.Written for individual readers, small groups, new believers, and thoughtful Christians, Discover the Book: 2 Kings explains Scripture clearly while keeping the biblical text central.
