Bilingual English and White Hmong Dialect: Following the United States' withdrawal of soldiers from Southeast Asia and General Vang Pao's departure from Laos in 1975, 12-year-old Maiv Yias and her family had to flee Long Tieng, the Hmong military base that was operated by the U.S.' Central Intelligence Agency. Maiv Yias and her mother, her 8-year-old sister, and her 4-year-old brother fled to a neighboring village where Maiv Yias' uncle lives. The story follows Maiv Yias' family through the jungles of Laos as they try to escape persecution by the VietCong and the Pathet Lao. This fictionalized historical children's book is based on the oral histories of Secret War survivors.
