About 18 Houses: A Daughter's Memoir
As a young girl, Amy always wondered why her dad never spoke about his past-the childhood stories as the oldest of eleven children raised by a single mother, or his time in a controversial war like Vietnam. Her aunts and uncles told stories of living without much in a small town to a mansion built by slaves in the outskirts of a larger city. They seemed to move homes as often as they changed socks. When the older children grew up, her dad John went off to war and others off to college or to marry. Amy decided she wanted to know her dad's stories-the life he buried deep inside. In her search for his life stories, she learned so much more. Her quest led her to life changing stories not only about her dad, but also a story of hope from a single mom and her dad's battle to keep his own family together.
