The 14th Virginia Infantry was one of the five Regiments in Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead's Brigade in the Civil War. This book begins with the overview of the battles, casualties, and prison camps. Following the narrative of the 14th Virginia through the war, the roster is listed by Company. The emphasis in the profiles is on finding basic details on the lives of the men who served, with the primary focus of Finding the Men in the 1860 Census. The 14th Virginia joined the 9th, 38th, 53rd, and 57th Virginia Infantries to become Lewis Armistead's Brigade. The men of the 14th primarily came from the counties of Amelia (Co A), Bedford (Co B), Fluvanna (Co C), Chesterfield (Cos D and I), Mecklenburg (Cos E and F), and Halifax (Cos G, H, and K). Over 1,500 men served in the 14th Virginia Infantry, and they suffered over 300 deaths. The majority of the losses were due to disease. The regiment lost more men in the prison camps than any other regiment in Armistead's Brigade. Interesting subplots were discovered, as many of the men came from the 1st Virginia Reserves of Benjamin Lyons Farinholt, and over a dozen men were assigned to the Navy, with a few being in the battle of the Merrimack and the Monitor. The Regiment served in many of the fiercest and most crucial battles of the war, including Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chester Station, Drewry's Bluff, and Five Forks. Seven officers and 49 men would be left to surrender at Appomattox.
