The title alone, “1000 Years of Annoying the French,” tells you write up front that this book will be long (around 700 pp.) and humorous. Stephen Clarke’s review of the relationship between the British and French since the Norman Conquest in 1066 covers the history of their cultures, wars, lords and literature in detail with such a wry sense of humor that it is interesting, not tedious. He clearly did a lot of research to produce this book but infecting it with witty observations throughout makes it both informative and fun. A great combination!
