Places are often defined by their buildings and their history, but what really makes a town or city are its people. That's certainly true of Gloucester. This book tells the story of some of the characters who help, or have helped, to make Gloucester the place it is today - either through their achievements or the force of their personality or both. This book is not about historical characters like the Saxon Warrior Queen Aethelflaed or the Sunday School founder Robert Raikes; their lives are adequately covered elsewhere. This is about people within living memory - the last 70 years or so. We tell the stories of a collection of remarkable people from all walks of life who have achieved, and continue to achieve, great things. Some of them are well-known, others less so. Many of those featured are too modest to broadcast their achievements but, as proud Gloucestrians, both authors believe in giving praise where praise is due for their contribution to this small but great city. By telling these stories, we hope this book records an important chapter of the city's social history and acts as an inspiration to others.
