1-800-Nappie-Poo is a tale born out of the chaos of newfound parenthood. My daughter, only a few months old at the time, was crying incessantly in the backseat, adamantly protesting her car seat. I gave her a bottle, then a pacifier. I tried making weird rhythmic sounds while rubbing her cheeks, but nothing helped. Suddenly, a familiar local business jingle came on the radio...1-800-something... something. Out of sheer desperation I began to sing my own lyrics to this jingle, and from there 1-800-Nappie-Poo took flight. My daughter stopped crying, I regained my sanity, and from then on I used 1-800-Nappie-Poo time and time again when nothing else seemed to work. After two children and several additions and revisions, 1-800-Nappie-Poo has remained a nostalgic treasure and a beacon of light for those dark times when the crying is constant and the sleep is in short supply. It's not only a rhythmic chant of parenting truth, but also a comforting lullaby from a mother's perspective. This story is a funny but heartfelt reminder of the messy, but beautiful, privilege of being a parent.
