Two small boys who become lifelong friends. One from the town, one from the castle on the hill. They share everything except the girl of their dreams. The Nazi's come to power and one joins the SS, the other, the Wehrmacht. They go to war, each in his own way. One drives his panzer into all the great battles of WW 2 the other drives Jews into the SS extermination camps and somehow they remain friends each saving the others life. The war ends and somehow they have both survived but now one of them is captured and to survive he must help to find his boyhood friend so that he can be prosecuted for war crimes. The girl they both love, now a nurse and a war scarred woman, stands between them and she becomes both bait and trap. The conflict of the love between these very different men drives them on to a very tragic conclusion.
