Dokhtar-e Aban (The Daughter of Aban) [Persian]

By Azita Kheiri

Elham looked up, and amidst the hustle and bustle of Habibe Khanom and Shabnam, who were spinning around the kitchen, her eyes found Shahin. The boy next door was always awake-whether it was when she was afraid of the dark, or when thunder crashed against the windows. Shahin always had an excuse to stay up; he was either studying or watching a movie. She had no idea that the boy next door always kept his eyes on a window, and if it lit up at an unusual hour, his heart would skip a beat.

Shahin closed the refrigerator door with a platter of fruit in hand and walked toward the counter. He placed the platter down, and his gaze locked with Elham's. Once, up until just a few months ago, he thought winning the heart of the girl next door would be the easiest thing in his life-easier than enduring the grueling moments at the barracks and understanding the rigid, inflexible rules of the military. But it wasn't so. Beneath her simple and sorrowful appearance, the girl next door possessed a foreign world; a world far away from him, and from all the people of Ashtikenan.
