Good job this wasn't the first Longmire book I read.

It seems almost always when a t.v. crime show gets in trouble, they travel South of the Border. I didn't know Craig Johnson was in trouble, but here we go with the all too familiar hero-against-the-odds-in-wicked-Mexico, complete with the lone protagonist riding in on his white horse to save the day all by his lonesome, despite the promise of grotesque, stomach-turning tortures, the loss of the few allies he has, and a staggering amount of weaponry whereas he has only a toothpick. Oo. And I forgot the incompetent American arm(s) of the law, and the traitorous Mexican ones. The entire book smacks of same-old, same-old. If I had read this book first before any other Longmire stories, I would never have read another. Fortunately, the rest of the series, up to this one, seems worthy of an afternoon read, despite the repeatedly 'tarnished gold' eyed, habitually and unnecessarily profane girlfriend, who is becoming tiresome.
