Book Overview

"A high-fantasy Memoirs of a Geisha, Chupeco's latest excels in originality" --Kirkus Reviews

A story of scorned witches, sinister curses, and resurrection, The Bone Witch is the start of a dark fantasy trilogy, perfect for fans of Serpent & Dove and The Cruel Prince.

Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price...

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother, Fox, from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha--one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles...and make a powerful choice.

Praise for The Bone Witch:

"A fantasy lover's fantasy" --Foreword Reviews

"Mesmerizing. Chupeco (The Suffering) does a magnificent job of balancing an intimate narrative perspective with sweeping worldbuilding, crafting her tale within a multicultural melting pot of influences as she presses toward a powerful cliffhanger."--Publishers Weekly, STARRED Review

"Chupeco delights us with a fascinating world and a rich atmosphere for a story that is exceptionally written from beginning to end."--Buzzfeed

"Readers who enjoy immersing themselves in detail will revel in Chupeco's finely wrought tale. Game of Thrones fans may see shades of Daenerys Targaryen in Tea, as she gathers a daeva army to unleash upon the world. Whether she is in the right remains a question unanswered, but the ending makes it clear her story is only beginning." --Booklist

Absolutely recommend for fantasy readers - I love it!

This completely surprised me in the best way. I went in expecting something darker and heavier on the necromancy right from the start (which may have just been my own misconception), so the beginning felt a bit slower than anticipated. But even then, I found myself 80 pages in, and the book had me hooked. I flew through this book in two days. I had just gotten back into a regular reading habit and had finished a few books before picking this up, but this was the first one that made me go, "here we go!" The kind of book where suddenly you're fully locked in and looking for every spare moment to keep reading it. What completely won me over was Rin Chupeco's writing style. It's genuinely beautiful. I loved the storytelling structure of moving between present-day storytelling and the unfolding history of how Tea became who she is. The back-and-forth made the story feel layered, suspenseful, and incredibly immersive. Tea was such an easy character for me to root for. There's something universally compelling about the underdog, but I think I connected especially hard with her outsider experience. Having been the "new kid" more than once growing up, I naturally empathized with that feeling of not quite belonging and trying to figure out where you fit in. I loved the atmosphere, the emotional pull, the world-building, and the magic system. If I had one note, it's only that I personally could've handled an even darker tone earlier on, but that's much more about my personal reading preference than actual criticism. Clearly not enough of one to matter, considering I completely devoured The Heart Forger and started The Shadow Glass the day it arrived. Honestly? This book made me want to read more of Rin's work, which is one of the highest compliments I can give an author. Absolutely recommend for fantasy readers who enjoy atmospheric world-building, emotional storytelling, and protagonists you can't help but root for.
