Book Overview

From Ronald H. Balson, author of the international bestseller Once We Were Brothers, comes a saga in the tradition of The Nightingale, Sarah's Key, and Lilac Girls, inspired by true events--a Holocaust survivor's quest to return to Poland, find two sisters lost during World War II, and fulfill a promise.

"A heartbreaking tale of a mother's love, friendship, and family."--
Library Journal

Lena Woodward, elegant and poised, has lived a comfortable life among Chicago Society since she immigrated to the US at the end of World War II. But now something has resurfaced that Lena cannot ignore: an unfulfilled promise she made long ago that can no longer stay buried.

Driven to renew the quest that still keeps her awake at night, Lena enlists the help of lawyer Catherine Lockhart and private investigator Liam Taggart. Behind Lena's stoic facade are memories that will no longer be contained. She begins to recount a tale harkening back to her harrowing childhood in Nazi-occupied Poland, of the bond she shared with her best friend, the beautiful, vivacious Karolina. Lena has cherished the memory of Karolina her whole life. But there is something about her own story that is unfinished--questions about Karolina and herself that remain unanswered. Soon Lena must decide what she is willing to risk to uncover a dark secret from the past...and face the ultimate truth.

Triumphant." --Chicago Tribune

A Fabulous Heartbreaking story.. All of them were forced to live in the Jewish Ghetto and systematically put on boxcar trains to one of the camps..if you were old, disabled or under 14..you went to Auschwitz and gassed to death..if you were able bodied..you went to a work camp...More were killed...than put to work...and you lived every day on a wing and a prayer. This story takes you through the lives of Lena.and her best girlfriend Karolina..together they made a pact as Karolina lay dying from the bullets of the Guards..as she tryed to make an escape from a Camp. Lena is very old now..89..and she wants to fulfill that promise to Karolina..before her age catches up with ...and she dies..before finding out the truth to a 50 yr old promise ..that she has Kept to HERSELF..ALLL THESE YEARS !! ! Another great book by Ronald H. Balson

A moving captivating story. Brought tears to my eyes.

Love this book!

This book has a depth and heart that stays with you. A different look at the Holocaust then I’ve read before. Moving characters that will stay with you.

Good book

This was a very good book. An intelligent and different perspective on a sad story in history.

I loved this book!!!

Just finished this book, could hardly put it down! Finished it in 2 days! I loved the story, even though it was very sad. Kind of along the lines of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. A really great story.
