Book Overview

The Let Them Theory has been praised across social media as a "life-changing" philosophy, yet one wonders if the buzz is more about clever marketing than meaningful substance. At its core, the book delivers a single, painfully obvious message: you can't control other people-only your reaction to them. This is a truism so well-worn it belongs on the label of a tea bag or at the bottom of an Instagram quote post-not in a book priced as a transformational revelation.

In this critique titled The Let Them Theory of Mel Robbins, scholar Richard Auchter examines and exposes the snake oil and quasi-psychology peddled in Mel Robbins' book, and the influencer industry at large, while also offering pragmatic perspectives on what real personal growth should look like.

not too many new ideas explored

This was a good read despite not really exploring anything I havent read before. Mel Robbins theory here is a take on the Alcoholic Anonymous prayer. She takes a little here and there from other authors while making it her own.

I don't understand the hype

While I appreciated the overall premise of the book, it was thoroughly unenjoyable to read. Length could have easily been cut by a third - lots of repetition that felt like the author was trying to hit a page count rather than elaborate on her ideas, too much space spent describing what she's going to tell the reader next (and insisting how utterly life-changing it is going to be!), and do we really need to see several pages of "Let Them" tattoos? The author also spends too much time patting herself on the back and making sure the reader knows how many books she has sold and how many people listen to her podcast; rather than demonstrating the effectiveness of implementing her theory, it comes across as arrogant and self-congratulatory. I genuinely do not understand the appeal.
