some poets bloom here

This brings back pleasant memories of my days in Florida where I heard some of these poets in Tallahassee. Perhaps for personal reasons, I like those poems with a sense of Florida the "Isle of Flowers" : this might be Peter Meinke "Azaleas "They thrive on acid, these azaleas; they burn in darkness" or Hal Shows "Camellias". From the beach Laurence Donovan writes of Dog Island "By day the quick willets // print the moment / in the sluiced-over sand" or Silvia Curbelo "In the distance the lights curve along Tampa Bay, a wishbone ready to snap". But they are not always writing of Florida, and I particularly likes Barbara Hamby "The Language of Bees" "The language of bees contains 76 distinct words for stinging ..." . Hunt Hawkins' "Skating" is touching. A man skating with a special daughter first "He has the exasperated look of a man life has called to be a saint when he didn't really feel like it" and then her brilliance "fluttering spasmodically like a butterfly trying to be born". This thus presents a fine collection of poets, many available on Anhinga Press
