Thinking like a Thief

For more than 30 years, I have been searching for this book: "Alarm Systems & Theft Prevention" written by Thad Lawrence Weber. Written in 1973, it is as relevant today as it was 25 years ago. The Book is logically structured and very easy to read. Mr. Weber was a security consultant (now retired), who specialized in commercial retail establishments (i.e., high-end, jewelry, furs, and antiques) as well as banks. Consider the impact that our current adverse economic environment will increase the likelihood of physical attacks on our assets through theft, robbery and burglary. Consider the "value added" which is provided by reducing risk of financial loss through early identification of potential theft risks. AUDIT NOTE: Generally, Auditing is concerned with the appropriate presentation of financial information, as well as the quality and effectiveness of the Systems of Internal Controls. One of the Key IC Attributes is: Limited Access to Assets (and the protection thereof). While auditors are generally concerned with access to computer systems (to prevent manipulation of financial records), they have traditionally given less concern to the physical security of the physical computers (i.e., the data center). Mr. Weber's discussion and analysis of physical security, alarm systems and related controls provides a clear and functional understand and guidepost to these topics which can easily be cut / copied directly into work papers (so why reinvent the wheel?). The book is also filled with wonderful, "war story" examples of criminal actions (both successful and unsuccessful): what happened, why it happened (causes), and the security solution (how to fix the problem). My guess is that some of these situations may familiar to the reader; and may even offer ready-made solutions to existing problems. I only regret, I had the opportunity to read this book BEFORE I purchase my own Residential Alarm System. In summery - most physical security systems are defeated in the same way as any other System of Internal Controls - People Failure & Human Error. However, if you follow Mr. Weber's advise and "Think like a thief", you may discover costly potential security breaches before they can occur.
