What is globalization? How have the world economies changed? What impact do these have on business and management practices? Globalization and Business Practice makes sense of globalization for the management student. With creative examples, case studies, and exercises, author Barbara Parker demonstrates how globalization impacts contemporary business and organizations and above all the way in which the different trends and factors interrelate. This integrated approach is the key feature of the book. Only by integrating the effects of global trends such as new technologies, new markets, cultural and political changes can students grasp the meaning of globalization and apply this to their study and understanding of contemporary business and management. Each chapter opens with a current case that introduces the key concepts covered in the chapter. Instances of globalization are given, followed by the effects at the organizational level and for management theory. The concluding section of the chapter reviews the key chapter concepts, a list of review and discussion questions, and gives current references to directly related future reading. Each chapter is supported by a separate section on the text s Internet homepage, http: //www.seattleu.edu/ parker. Globalization and Business Practice has a student and teacher s homepage, with links to relevant sites and teaching supplements. For each chapter: + Lectures for each chapter, providing teaching objectives, teaching notes, questions and exercises, and recommended materials to use + References to recommended materials such as videos and film, and how to obtain these + Additional exercises, assignments, and handouts for each chapter + Transparencies and power point presentation for use in lectures for each chapter + A sample syllabus, with term projects for individuals and groups; critical writing exercises for each chapter; a bibliography of library sources for research on global enterprises; and suggested cases for each chapter + A student homepage and teacher s homepage with links to relevant sites on the Internet for each chapter Globalization and Business Practice provides a lively, well-designed guide to the complexity of globalization that will be essential for those who study business and management in a global and international context. Barbara Parker is associate professor of management at the Albers School of Business and Economics, Seattle University.
This book is quite amazing! On the one hand it is virtually encyclopedic as a resource for contemporary managerial issues in International Business. On the other hand it is engaging and readable. As such it is an excellent resource for managers, students and researchers.
An Essential Perspective

Having lived outside of the United States for several years, I was amazed at the accuracy with which Dr. Parker could articulate many of the things that I had witnessed (and that had often left me speechless). Dr. Parker ventures to address a subject that is changing and developing at an astonishing rate, simply by presenting timeless foundations and essential insight. Dr. Parker weaves a wide variety of research with her own vast experience as an expatriot to lead the reader through their own special journey across their own special boundaries. I highly recommend this book for people who have lived outside the U.S. and/or those who are willing to accept that perhaps America may not be the center of the universe.Globalization is a highly complex issue. It cannot be captured in a magic bottle. Globalization is technological, sociological, idealogical, chaotic, politicized, humanized, ecological, spiritual, contradictory and paradoxical - everything wrapped together. Barbara Parker does a tremendous service by addressing the hard and the soft aspects of this complex science in an organized and intellectually stimulating order. Globalization and Business Practice - Managing across Boundaries is among my most treasured reference and pleasure books.
