This is an engaging story with likable characters facing the type of complex moral dilemmas that were all too common in Europe during WWII. My guess is that the detail in this book would be enjoyed more by those who are midwives or who enjoy the highly detailed descriptions of a woman's body during childbirth. For me, that part went further than it needed to for the story or the characters; I could have done with (far) less of it. Still, this did not keep me from developing an affinity for the main characters and their individual and shared stories. This WWII story takes a completely different direction in telling part of the history, and it is definitely worth reading.

The author weaves facts/fiction throughout the book about Eva Braun, Hitler’s significant other, her residence in Berghof where she lived a sheltered life and a midwife from a German work camp.
