Another Excellent Biography of Philly's Other Best Known Citizen!

John Wanamaker was as famous of Benjamin Franklin. Wanamaker dominated the department store industry as a visionary. This rare biography is well-designed and shows Wanamaker as a citizen of the city, country, and state. A man who was a father, husband, politician, and yes--owner of a department store that no longer carries it's name. I wished that the new owners, Macy's, would reconsider implementing the Wanamaker name in it's flagship store and the same goes for Marshall Fields in Chicago which changed it's name despite protest. Wanamakers was to Philly as Marshall Fields to Chicago but Macy's now owns both. Also, the book goes a little into writing a lot about Wanamaker's contributions to his religious beliefs as well. He was just as religious and his stores were also closed on Sundays. It would not be hard to find Wanamaker alive circling his store and talking with the customers. He was a hands-on fellow and should be commended for that approach. These days, the customer is just a number not friend or fellow citizen.

Wonderfully comprehensive and well written. Only wish section on Rodman Wanamaker was more detailed, to include more about the Millrose Games and Wanamaker Trophy of the PGA (Wanamaker founded the PGA of America).
