Adele Foster is determined to save her brother from the moral collapse that his new friends seem to be steering him into. However, there are rumors that John Foster's new paramour, Contessa Maria Fillipio, is a murderous and even a vampire. Not knowing who to turn to for help, a young lawyer puts her into contact with Jeremy Quentain, a man who is used to working outside the law to bring justice to those the law cannot reach. But, the Contessa is not a woman to be trifled with, working against her places Adele's life in extreme danger. But, with luck and courage and a little help, she just might win through. Canadian author Dan Ross (1912-95), under the pseudonym of Marilyn Ross, wrote this suspenseful, Gothic horror story, along with more than 300 others. This novel is quite good, with vampires and horror and daring escapes, not to mention a little bit of romance. The fly in the ointment is that the book quickly falls into a disappointing routine of Adele being tricked, captured and then rescued through a daring plan, only to be tricked and captured yet again. I mean, at what point does it occur to Adele's allies to provide her with a bodyguard? But, before that routine gets too oppressive, the book moves on to its exciting conclusion, and I really didn't think that it ruined the story completely. It is easy to see why Dan "Marilyn" Ross was such a successful and adored author, as this is a very good read. I enjoyed the time I spent reading The Vampire Contessa, and I do not hesitate to recommend it.
