I bought the smaller version; there is a larger version available.

Each year, a newer version is available, so keep your old ones as you add to the collection. The first edition of Leonard Maltin's Video Guide was published in 1969, and the final edition came out in 2014. Title Changes: Over the years, the guide evolved through several names: TV Movies Leonard Maltin's TV Movies and Video Guide Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide Finally, Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide I almost bought this smaller book as more than a useful book. Then, sitting next to it is the same book, word for word, that has twice the surface for twice the price. Of course, if you are economically conservative and have good eyesight, the smaller book works well. It is always fun to see how close one comes to Leonard’s conclusion, which is not always the same as yours. Yet, if you have not seen the film, you need some sort of guide. And to get a feel for how he thinks when making his judgments, there is an introduction covering how he rated some of the most popular films. Be sure to read the section “Key to This Book” as it tells the different media or lack of for each film. Some films are included because of their popularity, even if there are no recorded media, such as “John Goldfarb Please Come Home” (1965). Once again, in the version I purchased, many of my favorites have been left out, such as “Out There” (1995) and “Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death” (1989), based on “Heart of Darkness.” However, with 19,000+ entries, you will be kept busy trying to find out what else is missing.

How'd I live without one?

I picked up my very first copy of this invaluable resource (1993 edition) at a yard sale several years ago. Now, of course, I buy one annually and pass the old version along to favored friends and relatives. My two adult sons refuse, however, to be recipients ("we'd rather call and ask YOU for the information!") I refer to my guide daily at the very least (can you tell I love movies?), usually far more often on the weekends. I keep a copy in the living room and one next to my bedside. But really, I AM a relatively normal person with a full life --- honest!!

The Ultimate Companion for Film Buffs

Leonard Maltin is possibly my favorite critic. His taste is the best of all the thick film guidebooks. I also have the Mick Martin and Marsha Porter guide, they give films like Speed 5 out of 5 stars...pathetic. I have read maybe 20 off track reviews in Maltin's book...out of thousands. He's great, he's awesome, he's the most trustworthy...BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU RESPECT FILM!

one important omission

loved the book and everything about it , bein an old hollywood movie buff, its such a help to me, one thing that bothers me about the book is the omission of raul walsh the director of many fine classic movies such as WHITE HEAT with james cagney, somebody get ahold of ole leonard boy and tell him to list him its drivin me crazy LOL

Most reliable

I also know the Blockbuster Entertainment and the Martin/Porter guides, and I have to say that Maltin's is by far the most reliable. The reviews are precise and informative, and although he only gives the films up to 4 stars (the other two guides have 5), the ratings give a better idea of the films quality.
