Kent has written the most interesting and comprehensive pre-history of Madagascar to date, although this book is almost forty years old. Looking at four different kingdoms--the Sakalava, Antisaka, Bara and Imernina--Kent makes his thesis that Africa, once thought a small, nonimportant part of the island's history, is integral to the founding and state-building of these early kingdoms. This is information you simply cannot find anywhere else. For example, this is the only major history of the Bara tribe in English anywhere. The book is academic, dense and with its fair share of footnotes. But for any reader truly interested in the history of Madagascar, a treat.
