What is the Fated Mates Trope?

Fated Mates can best be described as soulmates on steroids. It’s essential that the partners be predestined to be together, whether that be through magical, biological, or spiritual means. Often, it is accompanied by an actual metaphysical pull the characters feel when near each other, likened to chemistry, a spark, just something within them that screams ‘Who is that?’ when they meet the one.

The Fated Mates trope is at its best in romance novels when the characters fight their feelings. Masterful Fated Mates writers use the trope to create sexual tension. Characters often do not recognize the push toward each other as love or attraction at first, which is what makes the trope distinct from Insta-Love or Love at First Sight. There are forces beyond their control that make each other the perfect match.
