About Our Portland Specialists: Learn about the picks below as selected and described by River and Paul in our Portland, OR processing center. Paul was the first hire in the department and has been working as a Collectible receiver since August 2015. In Paul's own words: "I come from working in an independent brick-and-mortar bookstore for 16 years, doing every job in the store, but specializing later in buying and pricing used books. In previous lives, I have raised chickens and worked in food service. I appreciate a wide variety of books, but especially enjoy finding and selling older, beautifully bound editions (leather, gilt, marbled edges, etc.). I am married with two daughters, and in my free time I enjoy brewing beer, hiking, playing guitar, watching movies, and reading.

Carrie
This is the true first edition of Stephen King’s first novel that is among the most sought-after collectibles in modern fiction.
Pre!
Steve Prefontaine was one of the most famous and influential distance runners. He competed in the 1972 Olympics, broke multiple distance running records and reached celebrity status in the running world, helping to spur a resurgence of interest in the sport. The annual Prefontaine Classic running meet is held in his honor in Eugene, Oregon. His influence and memory is prominent at the University of Oregon, his (and Paul's) alma mater. Paul often walked, biked, and ran on the Eugene trails he trained on.
Winnie-the-Pooh
This is the Canadian first edition, published just one year after the original (British) printing. Although it is lacking the dust jacket, it is in very good condition, with no flaws other than a previous owner name. Many of us grew up with Winnie-the-Pooh, to one extent or another. One feature of these books that makes them so appealing and enduring is the offering of multiple protaganists with quite varied personalities and emotional states: sometimes I (Paul) feel like Tigger, other times like Eeyore.
