Nobel Prize winning author William Golding was born in Cornwall, England in 1911 and educated at Oxford. In addition to writing, his professions included teacher, actor, sailor, and musician. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war Golding returned to his pre-war profession of teaching and wrote his first novel, Lord of the Flies. Lord of the Flies is a classic novel, still published in more than thirty-five languages. Filmed in 1963 by Peter Brook, the novel has also been adapted into a play. Golding won the coveted Booker Prize for Rites of Passage in 1980 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988. He died in 1993.
